Default Check Engine Light - '09 Ulysses XT

Has anyone heard of this issue? ......

The bike was cutting out while riding it so being just a year old I dutifuly dropped it at one of the Sydney dealers and explained what the problem was. They found that some cables behind the instrument cluster was shorting out and so they fixed it no probs (that took 2 days mind you!)

Upon doing road tests they found the engine light still coming on so they pulled the bike apart and tested everything on the bike. They found the cables for the O2 sensor were frayed so they repaired it. The light was still coming on.

More testing revealed nothing and so they finally after a week of playing with it called HD HQ in the US. A tech came out and looked at it and suggested that they replace the O2 sensor completely as it could still be shorting out.

But, this is still a theory and they're really not sure. Buell knowledge is pretty thin on the ground over here in Aus too. Any ideas?

None here I'm afraid. Mine popped the other day followed by an engine light and hasn't glitched since. I wrote it up as a fluke. Not comforting mind you but being so intermittent I'll let it pass. If it was an o2 I would think it would be easy to isolate but I'm not very knowledgeable on that area.
Good luck and keep us posted, maybe one of the rocket scientists around here can chime in for you. It should be throwing a code I would imagine? Do you know if it is?

yeah you'd think it would be throwing a code wouldn't you? It was throwing a code for the initial fault which they say the rewiring of the instrument cluster fixed. But the current occational check engine light isn't throwing a code up, very strange

Change the plugs, clean the filter, change the fluids and run the snot out of it (not to be confused with abusing it). I've seen that method fix more than one bike. =)

OK, picked the bike up from the dealer yesterday. They admitted they can't get the check engine light to stop coming up, and there's still no code but "it's safe to ride, and at least it's not cutting out anymore".

They have ordered a new O2 sensor and the line I got was; it has to come all the way from the US so it will most likely take more than 2 weeks to come in.

Come on! It's only the US, not the frigging moon!

By the time I pulled up at work 10 mins later the bike had cut out once already whilst riding ... hmmmm.

Why not buy an LC-1 with wideband O2? Then you can tune your bike, and put in a new sensor yourself.

Well at this point it's not confirmed that the O2 sensor will fix the issues, so while it's under its 3 year warrantee (Uly's only a year old) they can fix it. I'm not interested in spending good money after bad trying to work out something that is their responsibility to fix.

I have an 08 Uly with 10,000 miles on it. Just one time last year the engine cut out and the check engine light came on.

I was in the Canadian Rockies in B.C. returning from Alaska on the Alaskan Highway in the middle of nowhere. My heart did a jump, the engine fired up and has never done it since.

So I never investigated anything. I will look at all the wiring things that were mentioned.

I retired the bike after the adventure ride and was going to hang it from the ceiling in the garage. But, I decided to use it on occasions to run down to the fishing hole.

Time for an update; the new sensor arrived in Aus and was installed on Friday. I got a message from the dealer last thing on Friday telling me that it hasn't fixed the issue (insert mock suprised face here) and it's cutting out and faulering quite badly now. So, they're waiting for some feedback from the US and I'm stuck riding a loaner XR1200.

I have an '08 Uly with 8,000 miles. About six months ago mine started doing the same thing. After riding for 30+ minutes, the bike would lose power and the Check Engine light come on for 4-5 seconds and then recover. No codes were recorded. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet, but will keep you posted on any developments.
