BUBBA BLACKWELL
11AM Autograph session
12:45PM Thrill Show
3:15PM Thrill Show
At the age of ten, Bubba Blackwell,of Bon Secour, AL (the hometown of
Forrest Gump), saw Evel Knievel on TV for the very first time. From that
moment on, Bubba knew what he wanted to be when he grew up - a daredevil.
Eager to start, he devised a jump for his bicycle by
lining up garbage cans as his Dad looked on. When his Mom came home, his
Dad said, "Don't bother going in, we're fixin' to go to the
hospital, Blackwell recalls. He added, "I made the jump, which I
think made him a little mad." I think he was hoping I'd miss and
learn a lesson.
Blackwell's love of motorcycles dates back to the age of five, when he
raced mini-bikes. After growing up and riding a series of bikes that got
progressively bigger, Bubba followed the path of his TV
hero, Evel Knievel, into the world of AMA/CCA Roadracing in 1987. In just
one short year, Bubba rose to the title of "Heavyweight
Superbike National Champion." A couple of serious accidents on the race
circuit caused Bubba to re-evaluate his future options. That's when he
decided to "dust off his childhood dream" and try his hand at doing stunt
shows.
Since taking the leap into the world of motorcycle stunts, Bubba
Blackwell, has thrilled scores of audiences around the country
jumping cars, pick-ups, and Peterbilts astride his star-spangled
Harley-Davidson XR-750. When Bubba rides into view, with his red, white,
and blue motorcycle and superhero leathers, a real "Captain America"
comes alive, instantly electrifying any crowd or audience. Recently, The
Boston Herald stated, "Blackwell is the only official Harley-Davidson
daredevil to bring back the nostalgia and the human drama of the stunt
jumping made popular by the great Evel Knievel."
The 32 year old daredevil freely admits that the legendary Evel
Knievel is a major influence on his own tailor-made stunt shows.
"Knievel was definitely one of the finest showman of his era; not just
with motorcycles, but with drawing in the general public's
interest," Blackwell said. "No matter how crazy people thought his stunts
were, I think that deep down inside everyone admired his
courage and his unique presentation."
On April 26, 1998, Blackwell, broke daredevil Knievel's world record
successfully clearing 20 cars on his Harley-Davidson XR-750
motorcycle (the same type of motorcycle used by Even Knievel) in
front of the Harley-Davidson/Buell of Boston in Everett, MA. An
estimated crowd of 30,000 people watched Bubba do his thing. It was a
sensation.
Things from that point on happened quickly and Bubby knew 1999 would be a
year unlike any other. He next set his sights on topping all of Knievel's
records...car, truck, and bus jumps. In the days of summer, Blackwell,
also proceeded to break all "track records," like breaking the attendance
records at the Del Mar County Fair set by pop singing TV star, Brandy,
and performing in front of 31,000 screaming fans. Or how he was the talk
of Nashville, when he jumped at their Riverfront Park in September. But,
the best was yet to come. A year or two back, "The Tonight Show" first
contacted Bubba about doing a jump "live" on national network TV. In
October, that idea became a reality. The date was October 22nd, and
before 6.5 million people, Bubba flew over 14 semi-trucks, creating a
name for himself in the record books and
daredevil history. Not only did he jump the 14 trucks, but he won over
everyone involved in the feat at their NBC-TV Burbank studios. Bubba's
showmanship, charm, and thrill of thrills evoked the head of NBC to
comment, "It was the most exciting stunt on TV I've seen in years."
During the sit-down talk with Jay Leno, Bubba showed his sense of humor
by saying, "Do I really have to do this? What s southern
will do to get on TV." When it was rebroadcast on E-TV's "Talk Soup" they
said "Bubba made the jump, but tripped going to his car and
broke every bone in his body." Bubba was the talk of the country.
In November 1999, Blackwell was one of the special guests at the
annual "Love Ride," which starts at Glendale, CA. He joined fellow
Harley-Davidson riders like Lorenzo Lamas and Peter Fonda. "Love Ride 16"
helped raise tens of thousands of dollars for the LA Times
sponsored child read program and Muscular Dystrophy. Another
milestone.
What's next for Bubba Blackwell? Well, the Harley-Davidson Cafe' in Las
Vegas has leased the history breaking jump-suit from "The Tonight Show"
truck jump. In the next month or so, the suit will be encased and
displayed for all to see along with a portion of the jump ramp. Some say
that he'll be jumping the fountain at Caesar's Palace or going to New
York City to jump a series of taxi cabs. All Bubba will say is "The sky's
the limit and who knows? No one has ever jumped taxis, and we all know
what happened to Evel at Caesar's Palace.
We'll see."
Bubba Blackwell now begins to create his own records, and the year 2000
promises to be more thrilling and exciting than ever before. Bubba also
plans to work with schools talking to kids and
representing a "good role model in an age of so few." I feel that the
image of the daredevil in this country has not been a healthy one, and
I'd like to dispel that wild drinking man image daredevils are known for.
Things have changed. My show is for the whole family and filled with
showmanship, thrills, and hopefully, no spills. It's
exciting for me and the audiences alike.
Blackwell has a healthy attitude toward what he does and he recently
said, "My philosophy is that every man dies, but not every man really
lives. I wake up every day with a smile on my face, happy to be doing
something that I love to do. I'm really pretty lucky, blessed and
thankful."
